After a bitter breakup over five years ago, veterinarian Finn Buchanan and animal health technician Chelsea McCoy find themselves working together to establish an animal rescue facility in their county. This charming second chance romance is engaging and well written with lovely descriptive passages: She drank deeply, sighing when the rich coffee blend hit her taste buds and exploded into a myriad of sensations – the headiness of the sweet rich cream weaving around the delicious bitterness of the coffee beans.

For lovers of contemporary western romance, A Heart Creek Second Chance is a quick, easy read and perfect for a cozy evening curled up in your favourite armchair.

<![CDATA[On A Stormy Primeval Shore by Diane Scott Lewis and Nancy M. Bell]]>Fri, 10 Nov 2023 18:57:32 GMThttp://amwesterling.com/my-book-reviews/on-a-stormy-primeval-shore-by-diane-scott-lewis-and-nancy-m-bellThis book is the ninth book in the Canadian Historical Brides Collection, published by BWL Publishing in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday.

After the death of her mother, spirited Englishwoman Amelia Latimer sails to the colony of New Brunswick to join her soldier father. She meets Gilbert Arsenault, a handsome Acadian trader who is in a battle to save both his trading post and his mother’s land. Despite her father’s disapproval, Amelia falls in love with Gilbert, a man considered far beneath her in station.

The story is well written and the prose is lovely. Ie “She jerked a rack of wicks to her chest. They dangled a dance around her.” The book is full of historical detail and is sure to please any historical fiction/romance fan.

<![CDATA[False Pretences by Rosemary Morris]]>Wed, 21 Jun 2023 20:48:48 GMThttp://amwesterling.com/my-book-reviews/false-pretences-by-rosemary-morrisAnnabelle Allan’s greatest wish is to find out the identity of her parents. When she discovers her guardian has arranged for her to marry a man more than twenty years her senior, she runs away from boarding school in search of her family. However, to escape the unwanted marriage, she agrees to wed Major Roland Sarrat, the man who rescued her when her carriage was held up by a footpad. Little does she know he’s aware of her identity and has done so to protect her from her past.

Secrets and misunderstandings abound in this delightful Regency romance and the characters are charming and well thought out. What I particularly enjoyed about this engaging, well written book is Ms. Morris’ attention to historical detail which transports the reader to another era.

<![CDATA[Snake Oil by Jay Lang]]>Wed, 07 Jun 2023 19:39:33 GMThttp://amwesterling.com/my-book-reviews/snake-oil-by-jay-langUniversity student Sophie Grant leads a quiet life until she meets handsome auto shop employee Brandon Chase and a whirlwind romance ensues. Snake Oil starts off innocently enough with a few laugh out loud one liners. However, slowly and surely the dread and tension build as the story progresses, resulting in a heart pounding climax. Suspense isn’t my normal genre but I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. This well written, entertaining story will keep you turning the pages.

Ms. Dickson has done her research and this book provides an intriguing glimpse into the world of big rigs. Big Rig Trucker is a sweet, feel good read where family, love and loyalty are important. Canadian author.

Personally, I loved the trucking angle, it's different than the usual story lines. Intrigued? You can find the book on Amazon HERE.

<![CDATA[Saturday's Child by Rosemary Morris]]>Fri, 03 Mar 2023 19:03:32 GMThttp://amwesterling.com/my-book-reviews/saturdays-child-by-rosemary-morrisThis book is the final book in the Heroines Born on Different Days of the Week series and can be read as a stand alone novel.

After her father dies, Annie Johnson is determined to make her own way. Initially, she bakes puddings, biscuits, cakes and pies for a stall at the local market but eventually finds the means to open her own guest house. She encounters many difficulties along the way, including the unwanted attention of the unsavoury Bert Reed. A chance encounter with Marcus Courtney affects her more than she wants to admit but any future with him is not possible due to the differences in their station – she, the daughter of a soldier, and he, an aristocratic lord.

This well written story highlights the stark differences between the classes during Regency England. Ms. Morris’ depiction of the era is wonderful and I enjoyed the book very much. I recommend Saturday’s Child to fans of Regency romance.

<![CDATA[Gold Fever by Lawna Mackie]]>Wed, 28 Sep 2022 21:32:20 GMThttp://amwesterling.com/my-book-reviews/gold-fever-by-lawna-mackieCity girl Sam Avery flies to the Yukon Territory and hires guide and outfitter Hunter Gray to help her find her missing brother and a lost gold mine. This entertaining story has it all – a treasure map, villains, mystery and romance. I mean, who wouldn’t want to make love in an isolated mountain cabin with a hero named Hunter who has a wolf! This is Book 1 of the series but can be read as a standalone. I look forward to reading the rest of the series by this talented Canadian author!

<![CDATA[Tuesday's Child by Rosemary Morris]]>Tue, 26 Jul 2022 18:25:36 GMThttp://amwesterling.com/my-book-reviews/tuesdays-child-by-rosemary-morrisTuesday’s Child is part of the Heroines Born on Different Days of the Week series and can be read as a stand alone novel.

Destitute after the death of her husband, Lady Harriet Castleton relies on the charity of her father in law, the unscrupulous Earl of Pennington to provide a home for her and her young son Arthur. However, the situation is far from ideal as it has put Arthur, the future Earl, in danger. As a younger son, Dominic Markham pursued a life in the clergy never dreaming one day circumstances would change and he would become the next Earl of Faucon. Now he is expected to marry and produce heirs. Harriet and Dominic are attracted to one another and although a union between them would solve both their woes, they realize it would be impossible as she is not of his station.

Harriet and Dominic are delightful characters and this well written story has it all, including suspense, romance and an unexpected twist at the end. Once again, Ms. Morris has written an entertaining story that perfectly captures the essence of the Regency era and I recommend it for fans of Regency romance.

If this sounds like something you'd love to read, you can find it on your favourite online store HERE

<![CDATA[Incal by Janet Lane Walters]]>Wed, 13 Apr 2022 21:29:24 GMThttp://amwesterling.com/my-book-reviews/incal-by-janet-lane-waltersThis is the fourth and final book in the Moon Rising series and I read it as a stand alone. Three sisters and three brothers reunite to embark on a quest to restore justice, healing and change to the land of Incal. Each of the six have magical powers, whether as a Seer, Healer or Warrior. Ms. Walters has built a fabulous world filled with enchanted creatures, mystic places and sorcery. I admire her imagination. It’s not my usual genre but I enjoyed the story and the characters and would recommend it for readers of fantasy.
